With beautiful spring weather finally here, it’s time to deep clean the house! I use homemade cleaning products as much as possible because not only are they cost effective but also made with minimal, plant-based, toxin-free ingredients. With conventional household cleaners being a main source for harmful indoor pollutants, DIY methods are a safe and effective solution. They are also super easy to make from readily available items in your home.

To begin creating your DIY cleaning products, you will need a few basic household items including: empty spray bottles, tea tree essential oil, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, coconut oil, and both heavy duty and non-scratch sponges. My go-to sponges for all my cleaning needs are Scotch-Brite® Heavy Duty Scrub Sponges and Scotch-Brite® Non-Scratch Scrub Sponges. I love these sponges because they make it easy to stay organized and remember which sponge is for what cleaning job through their green and blue colors. The blue Scotch-Brite® sponges are non-scratch and perfect for sensitive cleaning jobs that can’t risk scratches like countertops, windows, and non-stick cookware. The green Scotch-Brite® Heavy Duty Scrub Sponges are ideal for deep cleaning and tough messes in the kitchen, garage, or outdoors. They also clean baked on messes 50% faster on things like oven racks and pots/pans! Oven Cleaner + Degreaser

I cook everyday for my family of 5 which means my oven takes a lot of abuse. Thick baked on messes accumulate over time and every few months my oven requires a deep clean. A simple way to remove oven grime without harsh chemicals is through baking soda and water. Place 1/2 cup baking soda in a small bowl and add water by the tablespoon until you reach a spreadable paste-like consistency. Remove the oven racks (these can be soaked in warm soapy water) and coat the inner oven in paste. Let this sit overnight or for several hours. Use a dampened Scotch-Brite® Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge to wipe away baking soda and grime, leaving a newly clean and shiny oven!

Streak-Free Window Cleaner

Lemon and water are all you need to clean windows, mirrors, or any other glass surfaces throughout your home. For a streak-free window and glass cleaner, add warm water to a quart sized spray bottle. Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice to the bottle and mix thoroughly. Spray on glass surfaces and wipe clean for streak-free shine!

Furniture Polish

Coconut oil has an infinite number of uses and one of them is an amazing furniture polish! Mix 1/2 cup of melted coconut oil with a couple of tablespoons of fresh lemon juice. Using a soft cloth or a Scotch-Brite® Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge, lightly wipe down furniture with this food-grade polish to leave behind a beautiful shine!

Multi-Purpose Disinfectant Spray

Vinegar and tea tree oil are two powerful natural disinfectants. Tea tree essential oil, derived from the Melaleuca alternifolia plant, is naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial making it an excellent additive to disinfectant sprays. The acetic acid in vinegar is another essential ingredient in this DIY spray as it aids in the elimination of household germs and bacteria. To make the spray, add equal parts vinegar and water (I use one cup of each). Next add 10 drops of tea tree essential oil and thoroughly mix. Spray on surfaces throughout the home like door handles, bathroom areas, kitchen sink area, and more!
