“I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for the TB Blood Test. I received a promotional item to thank me for my participation.”
Have you heard of the TB test or PPD? This test screens for the highly contagious and infectious disease called Tuberculosis. Tuberculosis travels through the body in the bloodstream and lymph nodes and most commonly affects the lungs however can also affect any body organ. When active, symptoms can include a productive cough, fever, chills, fatigue, and unintentional weight loss. The disease may also lay dormant in the body for several years with no symptoms present.
TB is transmitted through the air when a person infected with the active disease sneezes, coughs, or even talks with someone who is in close proximity and as a result breathes in the bacteria. Approximately 30% of the world’s population is infected with TB making it important for those who are vulnerable to get screened. This is particularly important to those with compromised immune systems, such as young children or people living with HIV.
As a registered nurse, I am required to receive an annual TB test (also known as the PPD test). The test involves getting a small prick in my forearm with Tuberculin. The injection site then needs to be read by a healthcare professional in 2-3 of days. My results have aways been negative, meaning no palpable swelling occurred at the site. While its extremely important to be screened for TB, the test can be inconvenient. Setting aside time to go back and forth to the doctors with a work schedule and children is not easy. Additionally, results are completely subjective and open to visual interpretation as they are based purely off the skin’s reaction.
For this reason I am very happy to share that there is a new TB blood test! This test replaces the outdated 110 year old skin test with proven reliable and accurate results (especially children). Better yet, these objective and clear cut results are available after only one doctors visit! Additional details/benefits include:
*The most accurate test for TB infection with no cross reaction with a previous TB vaccination
*Only requires a 3 ml blood draw regardless of patient age or immune status
