With the spring season and Earth Day approaching, it’s the perfect time to refresh and start thinking of all the ways to be more mindful in daily life. No matter the size, age or brand of your vehicle, going green with car care is a great place to begin making small changes that make a big difference over time. Below are five super easy ways to drive sustainably while also keeping your vehicle in good shape.

1. Maintain a Regular Service Schedule

Regular tune ups are the key to keep you car running in optimal condition while improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. Routine service visits provide a comprehensive checkup for your vehicle that help to discover and prevent any potential (costly) problems. Parts that directly affect your car’s performance and efficiency, including spark plugs, air/fuel filters, and oxygen sensors, are inspected and replaced if necessary. Taking your car in for a service visit has a direct and significant impact to your vehicle’s reliability and overall longevity.

2. Use Synthetic Oil

When shopping for automotive oil, synthetic is the perfect choice for green car care. This is because synthetic oil as opposed to conventional allows for longer intervals between oil changes which results in fewer overall oil changes. This means there is a decrease in your vehicle’s total oil consumption and less production of waste oil since your car is able to get more miles out of the same volume as conventional. Synthetic oil also improves fuel efficiency, engine performance, and long term protection through it’s consistent and pure formula that is highly stable even in seasonal highs/lows. With each oil change it is important to remember to recycle your waste at an authorized collection site or at your local Walmart Auto Care Center. My choice for synthetic motor oil is Mobil 1™ High Mileage. This advanced fully synthetic oil is perfect for my high mileage car (75,000+ miles) and is conveniently available in the automative section at Walmart. If you prefer a professional oil change, Walmart offers this high quality synthetic oil in their Auto Care Center as well. If you are unsure which oil your vehicle requires, this oil selector tool will help you find exactly what you need.

3. Tire Checks

Maintaining correct tire pressure can improve fuel economy by up to 3%. If a vehicle’s tires become under inflated it adds rolling resistance which causes the engine to work harder and burn more fuel to move the car. Additionally, under inflated tires wear out quicker and can lead to problems like reduced vehicle control or dangerous blowouts. Loss of tire pressure is normal and occurs over time due to changes in weather and regular usage. Plan to check your tire pressure monthly and be sure to get an accurate reading by using a high quality tire pressure gauge and analyzing pressure when your car hasn’t been driven for a few hours or at the start of the day.

4. Remove Extra Weight

One super easy way to improve gas mileage that is often overlooked is through a thorough clean out of your car. Any extra boxes or items you are storing in your back seat could be weighing down your car and causing more gas consumption than needed. Remove these unnecessary items so that you are only driving with the essentials and watch your milage improve while enjoying some extra savings.

5. Drive Smarter

Do you tend to accelerate rapidly or brake suddenly? This type of driving not only burns fuel rapidly but lowers your gas mileage substantially. Another factor in decreased fuel economy, is driving at speeds over 60 mph. Always observe the speed limit and consider utilizing your vehicle’s cruise control function to maintain a constant speed. Lastly, combine trips as much as possible and avoid making detours to maximize fuel efficiency.
