Calling all dog lovers! The 141st Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is just a few days away and will welcome dogs from all over the country to come together and compete in a variety of events. These events and activities will ultimately lead to the prized title of best in show. My daughters and I love to tune into this event each year and watch the amazing purebred dogs run through the various agility challenges.

Being at the Wesminster Kennel Club Dog Show would be the trip of a lifetime for any pet lover. With the help of Purina® Pro Plan® Nutrition That Performs® and Petco, you can now enter for a chance to be at the 2018 show here! I’m not sure our little dog Julio would be able to hold his own through the various show challenges but I do my best to keep him looking like a Westminster champion. Listed below are my top 5 favorite and easy ways to help our dog look just like a best in show winner.

1. Maintain a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet provides balanced nutrition that is essential to your pet’s functioning. Muscle tone, body condition, skin/coat, digestion, and immunity are all dependent on the high quality and essential nutrients in your dog’s food. Purina® Pro Plan® Dog Food offers specialized nutrition with over 70 dry and wet formulas that deliver advanced nutrition and delicious taste. Focus, Bright Mind, and Sport are just a few of the specialized food options that promote nutrition in your dog with targeted ingredients that bring out the best in your dog. We choose Purina® Pro Plan® Focus Sensitive Skin & Stomach Salmon & Rice Formula for our dog. Because Julio has very sensitive stomach, this is the perfect match for him. Packed with nutrient rich ingredients like salmon (first ingredient) and easily digestible rice and oat meal, Purina® Pro Plan® promotes overall health and well-being. It contains both omega-6, which nourishes skin and promotes a healthy coat, and omega-3 fatty acids which support healthy joints and mobility. Another reason why I prefer this food for our dog is because it is free of filler ingredients like corn, wheat, soy, and poultry by-product meal, and contains no artificial colors or flavors. We purchase this and any other necessary pet needs at our local Petco.

2. Brush/Groom Daily

Brushing your dog daily not only keeps your furry friend’s coat shiny and healthy but it also encourages circulation and relaxation. Natural skin oils are distributed during brushing which condition your dog’s coat giving it a beautiful shine. Additionally, dirt, debris, and dead skin cells are all removed, so that your dog’s fur is clean. Daily brushing keeps your dog looking like a champion while also offering some quality time for you and your pup.

3. Support a Healthy Weight

A healthy diet and exercise both contribute to an ideal weight for your dog. As mentioned above choosing a food that offers high quality ingredients and nutrition is crucial for your dog’s health. Adequate water is another important factor in a heathy diet. A constant supply of fresh water should be available for your dog so that his body can function and digest food properly. Exercise each day is significant in maintaining an optimal weight. Exercise helps boost metabolism, build muscle strength, and reduce health ailments like arthritis. A walk or run a couple times a day or a simple backyard game of fetch will help your dog get the exercise he requires each day.

4. Trim Nails Regularly

This may seem like an obvious tip to keep your dog looking his best but it is often overlooked. Keeping your dog’s nails trimmed is important to his overall health. If a dog’s nails become too long, they can easily break which can lead to pain and infection. Nails on a dog curve under when they grow too long which can cause them to dig into their sensitive toe pads. This is not only uncomfortable for your pet but can also lead to an abnormal gait. While it can be a bothersome task to get your dog to sit still for a nail trimming, the benefits outweigh the temporary inconvenience for your pup.

5. Brush Teeth and Offer Oral Health Treats

Brushing a dog’s teeth with a pet-specific brush and offering him oral health treats/toys will aid in keeping your dog’s mouth fresh and healthy by reducing plaque and tartar build-up. Chewing naturally helps in keeping teeth strong and clean and when combined with brushing will remove food particles stuck in between teeth. A healthy mouth can also help prevent gum disease and gingivitis (yes dogs get these too!).
