With the recent arrival of Spring and Earth Day just a couple weeks away what better time to teach your children about the environment! The change in season has sparked a curiosity in my little one and she now asks about the world around her, from how flowers grow to why the sky is blue. With her enthusiasm to learn, it is the perfect opportunity to introduce her to simple concepts about the earth and how to care for it. Since she loves to read along with myself and her sisters, I was very excited to learn about the Eco Boys and Girls book series.
Instilling love and care for the environment when children are young is significantly important so they hold onto these values as they grow. The Eco Boys and Girls books by Maria Snyder are a fun and interactive way to teach your children about how to live in harmony with the earth while also empowering them with knowledge to make positive choices. The books truly engage and inspire little ones to make a difference big and small. For example, in Eco Boys and Girls Plant an Urban Garden, the characters clean up litter in an overlooked city area and transform it into a beautiful community garden that all can enjoy. The books feature 5 Eco Boys and Girls characters that are bright, friendly, and fun to follow along with in the various stories. They all have cute names that are easy for children to remember: Ernie Earth, Lulu Love, Patsy Peace, Ray Recycle, and Sammy Sun. Each story is animated and can be read along with the character’s voices. All of the stories have a powerful message that is told in a simplified and easy to understand language for children.
You can be confident when you purchase Eco Boys and Girls books that you are also supporting a positive educational organization that’s mission is to spark interest in children and their families to learn about the earth and discover creative ways to live in harmony. Additionally, EBAG works with education, science and environmental organizations, such as the National Education Association, Association of Children’s Museums, Association of Science and Technology Centers. Furthermore, they are reaching international spaces through the United Nations and global peace building organizations.
After my daughter read the series of books, she was inspired to plant her own garden with her favorite vegetables! We thought eggshells would make the perfect seed starters for our garden and after saving a few after breakfast we were ready to start our project!
Organic seeds of choice
Spray bottle with water
First, color the outside of the eggshells with markers. Place shells into egg carton and fill the shells just barely to the top with potting soil. Gently press the seeds downward into the soil, and cover with more soil. Spray your planter with water and then place in a sunny area indoors. Water each day or as needed. Once the seeds have sprouted and grown about 2-3 inches they are ready to be transported. Crack the shells slightly and place them in the ground (the shells are naturally biodegradable and beneficial to surrounding soil).
